Search engine tactics
How many search engines
should I use?
Tell me a few good banner companies...
There several ways. You can sell something (products, goods, ideas), you can resell things (and get some money out of it), or you can just receive money from companies which will put a banner on your site. Or, you can use a combination of the above.
No matter which way you are using, your success primarily depends upon one factor, and that is traffic. The more traffic you have, the more money you will make. If you sell your own paintings, if you are reselling BMW's or even if you have a brilliant cartoon site, you need traffic.
How does it work?
If you sell something, it's obvious. People will
visit your site and buy whatever you offer. The more visitors you have,
the more it's likely to sell more.
If you are reselling something, it's pretty much
the same thing. Resell some Boeings and you'll be rich soon.
If you have banners, the situation is a little different.
Your checks will be based on the number of the people which click the banner.
Again, there are a lot of ad companies, and each one has a different policy.
Since you are reading this, I suppose that you read
the newbie page. The award-winning method is to have your page listed as
high as possible in as many search engines as possible. What's the big
deal?
Quite simply, if your site comes up in the first
ten results of a search, your chances of being viewed are increased dramatically.
And so is traffic. And it's not just plain traffic, but what it's called
"targetted traffic". It won't be easy.
We won't be posting a lot of info here... and that's because it gets out-of-date very fast. But what you get here is important.
A few facts:
There are no two search engine that use the same search algorithm.
Most of the search engines do not tell how they index the documents.
Or, worse, they tell you one rule and use another.
The search engines can and will ban you if you use too
agressive tactics.
Always, before submitting your site to a search engine, read all the
FAQ's and rules.
The only way to be sure is by trying. But the rules can change, so
if your traffic diminushes, you should change your approach.
Some tactics
First, you have to know a few things about HTML. Some search engines
use HTML meta tags for indexing. The most used tags are "description" and
"keywords". Here's how they should look like (always in the head section):
<meta name="description" content="Description of your document ">
<meta name="keywords" content="your keywords">
It's a good idea not to be repetitive here. It's bad Nettiquette, you can get banned from the search engine, and, what's worse, the person running the search won't click a document presented by the search engine like:
Title: My Brilliant Page My Brilliant Page My Brilliant Page My Brilliant
Page
Description: comics, comics, comics, cartoons, cartoons, cartoons
even if your search comes first.
Remember, each search engine is different. Try different approaches on different search engines. You can build a different index page for each one.
Some search engines use for indexing your first few lines of text. Some people hide that text, using the same font color as the background color. You can get banned for that.
To find out more, you need to join a discution group about search engine tactics. That's the best way, and will keep you informed up to date.
As many as possible. The more search engines your site is submitted to, the more visits you will have. Let's take a look at the most used search engines (PCData Online - August 1999):
1 Yahoo Sites
41,247
2 AOL Sites
41,178
3 Microsoft Sites
40,697
4 Lycos
30,880
6 Excite Network
19,272
9 Altavista
12,365
19 Looksmart
10,198
In fact, those are most visited sites, but when the average surfer visits
a site, he will run his search from there. Always keep an eye on the new
search engines, because are considered more accurate. I will only mention
The
Northern Light and Google!.
So, submit your site to those search engines for a start.
Keep in mind that each search engine might have a different set of indexing rules, and different policies. So, what will get you a first ranking on one engine, might get you banned on the other.
